Vanilla extract, widely used in cooking and baking, has a history that traces back to the Totonac people in Mexico. It was later brought to Europe in the 16th century by Spanish explorers. The initial challenge in cultivating vanilla outside Mexico was the absence of its natural pollinator, the Melipona bee.
