Citrus Rind vs Zest

What is the difference between citrus rind and zest? Can they be substituted with each other if they are different? This got me confused since there are several google links that tell me they are the same and some that say they are different.

From my understanding, zest is just the outer part - the thin yellow part if we are talking about lemon. The rind is thicker and includes the white part of the peel too. Basically, you can get zest by grating the rind.
