*I* prefer plant based/Nutritarian. Although I do supplement with limited meat (mostly chicken and fish, 2-3 meals per week). I have found it to be equally fast and, given that I am not consuming much meat or dairy it has been more beneficial for me cholesterol/health wise. It can be a bit of a challenge to get enough iron but I am working on that. My husband has done keto for 20 years off and on. He has issues now with cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes. He did not have those issues when he started. As for the diet itself, he has issues with cravings when he starts up the diet and then gets sick of the foods quickly after he's been on it for a while. When I did that diet with him I found it didn't work for me at all & I felt worse. HOWEVER, many people do the diet differently and have success with it. I think it has a lot to do with how you approach it. My husband is NOT a fan of vegetables at all. If you do a lot of low carb veg (greens & salads & cruciferous) and then add in some meats (preferably healthy meats) and fats (also healthy low carb fats) probably you will be fine. If you are doing steak and cheese and cream based everything, it might cause you health issues like it did him.

Hey, I hope I can help you. The keto diet is one only one option, there are so many different diets. My advice is first to analyze the keto diet to see are you going to be able to consume food that you like. Also important part is how this diet will be aligned with your lifestyle. Do you like to eat carbs? Are you a social person that eats out often?

I've been dropping weight for my upcoming wedding and what's really helped me is writing down what I eat and the calories I am consuming. I'm not super strict on keto, but I do aim to eat as much lean protein as possible, some fats (less fats than classic keto), and as many raw/roasted/steamed/sauteed veggies as I want. What's great about writing things down is that you can experiment every 4ish weeks and see what works best for you!

I will also share that nuts (while they are healthy) were single-handedly responsible for stunting my progress a few months back. I was simply eating too many! After I cut them out, I continued to make progress again. Turns out, I'm just not capable of having 1/4 cup of nuts every once in a while. They're toooooo delicious so I can't keep them in the house.

I agree with Jacklyn T writing down everything that you eat will help a lot. You can easily find out how many calories per day making you lose weight. I am a fan of tracking my food and calories intake. That way I do not need to avoid any food I just incorporate it into my daily calories.

I never tried Atkins myself but I know a lot of people that lost weight by following it.

I prefer Atkins '72, myself. I've done Keto and the new Atkins, but I lose better on Atkins original. It's really a matter of preference. I don't count calories, worry about macros, or do IF (intermittent fasting). My recipes are saved under "keto" for me, only because when I started Whisk I was doing Keto. All the macros were just too much for me. Plus, I stalled under Keto. You really have to sort of try for yourself to see what works. If you try Keto and don't care for it, I suggest checking out the Facebook Atkins '72 diet group or getting that book for yourself. You can find it on Amazon, Walmart, or in just about any used bookstore if you are in the U.S. If not, still probably Amazon. I lost 100# on Atkins about 20 years ago and kept it off easily for about 6 years. Then I ran into some medical and family issues and gained it back. I started it again this year, then switched to Keto at the advice of a few people who said it worked better. It didn't, for me. I did horribly. I've switched back to Atkins and am losing again. IMO, Atkins is better because a) You only count carbs, nothing else. b) You don't starve yourself. You eat as much as you want until full. No calorie counting at all. c) The food you eat is real food. No special meals. True, no sugar, starches or junk food, but you make up for it with steak, butter, bacon, chicken, eggs, cheese, so many recipes for amazing foods you CAN eat. I'm never hungry. Good luck with losing. :) Hope you do well. I have no idea if people can contact each other on Whisk, but if so and you decide to do Atkins and need some advice or help, feel free to contact me. Be a happy loser!!

keto worked well for me. I've notice that many folks who struggle with keto simple are not really doing "keto". If you break Keto a little, then you are thrown out of a ketogenic state and it take you a 2-3 days to get back in it. To really do Keto, 70-80% of your meal should be fats (Avocados, dairy, nuts, meats, fresh coconut, etc), protein should be 10-20%, and carbs "can" be up to 10%, but your body does not need carbs, so I avoid them knowing some carbs will sneak by naturally. I use keto test strips to easily confirm that I am in keto and I use them after meals when I am learning what kicks me out of keto. There are 2 things that kick you out of keto: too many carbs or too much protein. I like to keep things simple: I stay away from breads, pasta or anything doughy and things that are sugary, including most fruits - black berries/raspberries, coconut are good, but research others; most of my fats come from cheese, avocados, cooking with olive/avocado oil (using them as dressings on salads is good too), nuts (I know a previous commenter said nuts took them out of keto, but unless they were peanuts (a legume, not a nut) then all real nuts should be perfectly fine. I have been doing Keto for about a year now after watching Fat Fiction on Netflix, lost 70lbs and its stayed off.
