I love the recipes added in here but does anyone know what actually causes a child to be a picky eater?

It’s different for all kids, for some it’s sensory. I think a lot of it lies in the fact that food is one of the few areas where younger children hold power and get to make decisions, and they are learning to use it. Role models attitudes toward food and eating habits also play a big part. In the division of responsibilities, parents decide what to serve, when it’s available and where it is eaten. Allow the kids to decide what and if they will eat (from those selections) and how much. It’s hard at first, but eventually will raise intuitive eaters that can self regulate. This of course, may not work for those with more severe sensory issues or those on the spectrum.

I think a lot of times sensory issues come into play

I believe that for some kids it is related to how food looks like. I remember I didn't want to try spinach when I was a kid because it looked disgusting to me. Now I love it!

Definitely textures and smells. My son is on the spectrum, and will eat what I put in front of him if I bribe him with a peanut butter cup! He will gag with some foods, but will push through it for that treat. All about a reward.. in this family at least!

Thanks for this. Interesting how overlooked texture is when I'm planning meals.

Anything and everything under the sun. Could be a sensory issue, a bad mood, too much distraction at dinner time, or even that you're not modeling a healthy diet for them. Every child is different and you'll need to figure out what your kid is having problems with. But if you want some place to start, create a clean, well lit, positive eating environment. When you minimize distractions and engage with them at the dinner table, you'll likely have an easier time finding what hurdles need to be overcome and whatever quirks they have about eating.
