Has anyone tried bbq pulled "chicken" using Jackfruit? What was your experience?

It’s not a bad analog. Be sure to get young brined jackfruit. It pretty much takes on the flavor of whatever seasonings you wish to use. But I would say I prefer seitan over jackfruit for meat substitutes. It has a bit more chew to it and you can give it a more meaty flavor as a base and then add seasoning over that as well so you can have more dynamic flavors and textures. Also it’s not very high in protein so I find it’s not very satiating but it does have some other beneficial nutrients. Give it a try and see what you think. It’s fairly inexpensive too.

i definitely recommend baking the jackfruit first to dry it out, as it makes a better texture and gives it less of a mushy feel. Then whatever bbq sauce you want! I think it's a great substitute it just takes some patience lol

If you buy BBQ Jackfruit I highly recommend it. I used it for sliders as a vegan substitute and it was just as good as the pulled pork.

I use seitan for a lot of my dishes, love the stuff. I saw a recipe for the BBQ shredded jackfruit and was curious. Micheala, thanks for the suggestion 😊

Diana, thank you for the suggestion 😊 I'm definitely going to find that and try it. I've typically used seitan, tofu and soy products, but after making plant based sloppy joes with green lentils... I've been exploring more meat substitute options that are fruit/veggie.

I bought the BBQ Jackfruit from the store, and my whole family hated it. It looks like others have loved it, so it really depends on your taste.

I thought it was terrible. I used canned. Not doing that again.

I’ve used young jackfruit in a can. Make sure you rinse it well and I actually squeeze out the liquid…which helps break it apart anyway. I baked mine with a bbq seasoning rub to dry it out and then baked it again with the bbq sauce

The way to get the sour taste out of canned jackfruit is to boil it for 15min with 3 cloves of garlic. After that, you can season it however you want. It works ike a charm every time I do it.
