Baking powder vs baking soda

Hi, I enjoy baking a lot but usually I just follow the recipe instructions. I was wondering what is the difference between baking powder and baking soda and how does it affect the recipe in the end?

Bicarbonate of Soda (Baking Soda) is an ingredient in Baking Powder. Baking Powder is 1/4 as strong as Baking Soda, so I would substitute a 1/4tsp Baking Soda with 1tsp of Baking Powder. Hope this Helps! 🤗

In simple words, both substance needs liquid to work but, Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate) needs an acidic substance to work as starter to be able to activate and begin the rising process, wich noticed in many cases by adding lime juice or some sort of acid in the recipe, on second hand Baking Powder is a mix of dry (sodium bicarbonate) as well as dry acid, so it only need a liquid to be able to activate! in terms of substitution as @baneeks said you would do 4tsp of baking powder in substitute of 1tsp of baking soda (with the elimination of the acid in the recipe), and if you would do the opposite you need 1/4tsp of baking soda and an acid (the rule might be wide depending on how strong the acid you use but you can do 1tsp of lemon juice or vinegar for every 1/2tsp of baking soda) instead of 1tsp of baking powder!

I think you can sub powder for soda by doubling the amt of powder or its vice versa I can't remember.

Thank you all and thanks Ebrahim for a detailed explanation. 🥰 I have just one more question. Is there a difference regarding the end product? Is it better/safer to use baking powder or is it all the same?

More than happy to help, your welcome! regarding the end product, it should be the same (in theory) since both substance nearly the same (baking powder is actually baking soda with an acid) but i found baking soda can give you a bit of a metallic taste especially when adding more than what it needs, but in general there is no difference in terms of substitution or safety side! p.s. you can actually make your own Baking Powder by mixing Baking soda and a dry acid, google it for more details!

I don't think there is a difference to be honest

Lilly belle could you please stop answering if you don't know. You've done it on multiple posts and it's unfair on the op when your info is incorrect. Luckily others have answered well on a couple you have answered on so as not to give incorrect and confusing answers.
