Step 3? Heat the butter and sugars while mixing it?

Step 3 confuses me. My stand mixer doesn't have a heat function (I've never heard of one that does), so I did it with a hand mixer over the stove, but the sugar just burned to the bottom even at the lowest heat with constant mixing.

I'm assuming it was meant to say, on medium speed for five minutes, not medium heat when beating.
