Cast Iron Yes or No?

I've never used a cast iron skillet before and I am thinking of buying one. From what I've seen I can prepare a variety of dishes in it, is that true? Generally, what are the pros and cons of cast iron?

I love my cast iron, it heats evenly and is so easy to clean. I’ve always got them used so they’re usually already well-seasoned, but cleaning & seasoning would be the things I’d recommend looking into! But they last forever and they’re so easy so yeah I absolutely recommend. You can use them on the stove or in the oven!

Thanks, guys! Now I want to buy it even more :) I've read about seasoning and it does not seem very difficult, the cleaning part seems more complicated but I will manage it. @Ashlee wooow 80 years, that is amazing 😲

I have a special tool for cleaning mine: a piece of ringmail just for scrubbing cast iron. Search Amazon for "the Ringer." After each use, I dump a handful of coarse kosher salt in the pan, then scrub it with the Ringer. Rinse, pop it on a stove burner to heat it dry, and voilà! Cleaning is a snap, and it doesn't damage the seasoning.

Amen to previous responses.. even dried out cast iron can be cleaned and seasoned. Only con is that “pests are attracted to the seasoned pot (since technically they aren’t ever “cleaned” of all flavor/scent I keep mine in the oven & everyone knows to take out & put back.

I love my cast iron. It can take a beating and lasts forever. It's great for searing meats and vegetables. I like baking cakes or making cornbread in the cast iron. When I pull it out of the oven, it goes straight to the dinner table and keeps the bread warm throughout the whole dinner. There's great one-pan dishes that you can cook & serve up on a cast iron. The cons for me: It's heavy. My main is 15", and I have to hold the handle with both my hands when I'm moving it around. The handle also gets very hot since it's all cast iron, so you will have to wear a mitt or put something over the handle. Because it's heavy, I also don't ike cleaning it. I use a separate steel wool scrubber to "clean" because the grease on the bottom of the cast iron will ruin any sponge that touches it.
