Cherry tomato
PantryNot to be confused with grape tomatoes, the cherry tomato is small and round and comes in red, orange, yellow, and even black. Though they’re usually about the size of cherries, hence how they got their name, they can actually grow as large as a golf ball. They’re typically thin-skinned, quite sweet and very juicy, so you’ll get plenty of those ripe seeds when you bite into one. On the other hand, grape versions have thicker skins and are meatier, meaning they’re less watery. However, they are both types of baby tomatoes – so they’re not completely different! Cherry tomatoes aren’t new, even if you only grew up eating the larger ones. In fact, they’ve been cultivated for at least a couple hundred years. They’re thought to have originated in Peru and northern Chile, but they’ve been popular in America since at least the early to mid-1900s. Like their bigger cousins, cherry tomatoes aren’t short of vitamins and minerals. There’s only one or two calories per tomato, so they’re easy to add to salads, snack platters, and even cooked dishes for extra volume and nutrition without extra calories. Aside from their high vitamin C content, they’re also an excellent source of lycopene. Lycopene is a compound which may help to prevent inflammation, blood clotting, and osteoporosis.. So if you love them, don’t be afraid to add them to your diet. If you eat too many of them, you might suffer from acid reflux or other digestive issues – and if you have stomach ulcers, you might not be able to eat them in the quantities that other people can.
