Cherry tomato
PantryNot to be confused with grape tomatoes, the cherry tomato is small and round and comes in red, orange, yellow, and even black. Though theyโre usually about the size of cherries, hence how they got their name, they can actually grow as large as a golf ball. Theyโre typically thin-skinned, quite sweet and very juicy, so youโll get plenty of those ripe seeds when you bite into one. On the other hand, grape versions have thicker skins and are meatier, meaning theyโre less watery. However, they are both types of baby tomatoes โ so theyโre not completely different! Cherry tomatoes arenโt new, even if you only grew up eating the larger ones. In fact, theyโve been cultivated for at least a couple hundred years. Theyโre thought to have originated in Peru and northern Chile, but theyโve been popular in America since at least the early to mid-1900s. Like their bigger cousins, cherry tomatoes arenโt short of vitamins and minerals. Thereโs only one or two calories per tomato, so theyโre easy to add to salads, snack platters, and even cooked dishes for extra volume and nutrition without extra calories. Aside from their high vitamin C content, theyโre also an excellent source of lycopene. Lycopene is a compound which may help to prevent inflammation, blood clotting, and osteoporosis.. So if you love them, donโt be afraid to add them to your diet. If you eat too many of them, you might suffer from acid reflux or other digestive issues โ and if you have stomach ulcers, you might not be able to eat them in the quantities that other people can.
