For the syrup:
Step 1
In a small saucepan, combine the water and brown sugar. Bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar is fully dissolved.
Step 2
Remove from heat, add the spices, cover, and allow the mixture to steep for at least 30 minutes (or overnight for a stronger flavor).
Step 3
Strain the syrup to remove the spices and transfer it to an airtight container.
Step 4
Store refrigerated for up to two weeks.
Step 5
Using a funnel, pour whiskey, water, syrup, and bitters into your pitcher jug. Close the bottle and gently rock the contents back and forth a few times to combine. Add more syrup, water, and/or bitters to taste, but be sure to do so in very small amounts—the balance here is deceptively delicate.
