Instructions
Step 1
Dissolve salt, sugar, molasses and shortening in the warm water. Scald rolled oats in boiling water. Mix sugar with yeast in lukewarm water. Let yeast sit for 5-10 mins. Make a well in the center of the flour in a mixing bowl. Add molasses, yeast and rolled oat mixtures; combine.
Step 2
Remove mixture from bowl, knead until pliable and smooth. Place in a greased bowl, let rise 60-90 mins. Knead. Place in 2 pans,let rise until doubled in size.
Step 3
Preheat oven to 425°, bake bread 15 mins, then turn down to 375° for 30 mins. Let cool slightly in pans then move to a cooling rack.
