Sugar at the bottom

What is the purpose of putting the sugar at the bottom underneath the rolls? Just for added texture and flavor? Or does it actually do anything? (Wondering if I can skip this step!)
Jelly
When sugar is placed at the bottom of the baking dish, it caramelizes as it bakes. This caramelization adds a rich, sweet flavor to the bottom of the cinnamon rolls and creates a slightly sticky and delicious coating. Also, the caramelized sugar at the bottom of the dish helps keep the bottom of the cinnamon rolls moist and soft during baking. Hope this helps :)
