What culture are empanadas from?

They say Spain, but I've always associated them with Argentina. My family is from Jalisco, Mexico and they've never been a traditional stable for us although I know they've cropped up all over South America.

I think many cultures have a version of empanadas. I also associate them with South American countries more than Spain.

I agree that a lot of cultures have their version of the empanada. As a big fan of Mexican cuisine, I know from a bit of research that the empanada made its way to Mexico in the 16th century via the Spanish who shared their beloved pastry recipes with the Maya and Aztecs.
