Mini babybel
FridgeBabybel cheese was a popular snack for plenty of kids growing up, but it isn’t limited to eating by itself. Lots of us will happily munch on a Babybel in between meals, in a sandwich, or as part of a salad or picnic because they’re tasty, easy to transport, and come in a conveniently portioned size. Plus, they’re a relatively filling and healthy snack. Babybel cheese was first made in France, and the mini portions in red wax as we know today were debuted in 1977. Nowadays, around three quarters of those individual Babybel cheeses are eaten outside of France. We’ve found ourselves wondering what exactly Babybel cheese is made of. You might think they’re processed cheeses, but you’d be wrong! Though they’re now available in lots of different varieties, like gouda and cheddar, the original Babybel mini cheeses are basically a French recipe for Dutch Edam cheese. Much like traditional Edam, it’s semi-hard and slightly sweet. As for the red wax covering? That’s just to protect them from mold or contamination. Plus, it’s easier to unwrap on the go and is better for the environment than plastic packaging.
