I wouldn't use granulated sugar instead of the icing/confectioners sugar, it would make a somewhat crunchy icing. I have been told that you can essentially make white caster sugar by grinding it in the food processor for a few minutes. Golden caster sugar has some molasses in it, so perhaps subbing in a little brown sugar would work. But, while I easily experiment with most recipes, baking recipes are more difficult because there is a greater chance of true failure. Here it's essentially a textural issue.
