I use coconut oil instead of butter in the batter for this recipe, but I keep the butter for topping. Sometimes I mix plums, nectarines, or peaches, or just use one of those—the recipe works great with any of them. I skip the cloves and use nutmeg instead. Both my husband and I love it, though my mom and sister aren't as keen—they thought it wasn't baked enough since it can get a bit gooey in the middle around the fruit. Next time, I might try lowering the temperature and baking it a bit longer to see how it turns out.
