I am writing this comment a while after making this, so I can't recall the details well. However it worked out really well. I made it in a 9-inch cake pan and the results were great. I am not certain on this, but I think I lowered the amount of icing that I put on the cake quite a bit, but it does make it more difficult to spread it everywhere without part of the cake still being visible.
