It could be that everyone else has a need for a more bland version. Adding some crushed peppers (any type really), other sauce types (teriyaki or something), and generally more garlic/onion usually helps. I personally mix spices too (Italian seasoning is an excellent base flavor that plays well with most cuisines). I'm yet to make this particular recipe but maybe this helps!

Maybe next time, add a little MSG? It's just you in your own kitchen, so you can add spice or aromatics with reckless abandon and no one would ever know. I added some black bean paste and maybe a little extra maple syrup, chilis, and ginger, but nobody saw it, so the calories don't count.
