Are you sure you used cream cheese? Was it out of date?

Ok. Some brands, such as Philadelphia, are not truly cream cheese. Usually in fine print, some where on the packaging they put what it really is. The reason is that true cream cheese has a very short shelf life and they have to have a product that will last until someone buys it. If it is true cream cheese and it has a strong flavor, even though it is not out of date, something went wrong with that batch, which could easily happen as cream cheese is one of the more difficult cheeses to make correctly. I don't know where you live, but in the US take it back to the store and get your money back, or if you want to try again, exchange it for a different brand. One of the ways that you can tell it is real cream cheese is that it will be slightly grainy. If it is totally smooth it is not really cream cheese.
