For novices like me: self-raising flour is DIFFERENT from regular flour! This is critical. If you use regular flour, the scones won't rise and will be very dense and hard.
If you don't have self-raising flour, you can make your own by adding a bit of salt and baking powder. (1 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp salt: 1 cup flour)
That aside, I found the scones are good with a bit of butter or with soup, but pretty bland and dry on their own. I'd make them again, but they're not my favourite.
