We don't use spray oil- veggie oil made the donuts stick to the silicone pan but crisco worked like a dream.
We tried the melted butter dip as well as dipping in sugar while hot like one review suggested. We definitely preferred skipping the butter (it made them too heavy and the butter overpowered the other flavors).
Only the faintest apple flavor, next time I might try adding shredded apple or apple butter like other reviewers suggested.
