I have made this several times because it is super tasty! I do leave out the added oil because the bacon provides enough fat, and I add some garlic. I also always use thick-cut bacon because it better matches the timing with the brussel sprouts. it's thicker so less likely to burn and provides enough oil for the veggies. For the people that are have trouble with things getting too dark I think their problem might be that they are leaving oils out and using regular-cut bacon.
