I made this, and we all loved it however it was quite sickly sweet by the end of eating it. What can I substitute the sugar for, as I'm assuming this is the sweetness or the fish sauce? I put cabbage in it instead of on rice.

Just use less sugar

If you make the salad I made, the nice vinegary contrast helped for me. I used more chili in my salad and meat for the spicy contract too, but the key point was my tomato and cucumber salad with the fresh garlic and ginger.
