So I attempted this recipe and did an okay job!
Here are the changes I made:
- I used Granny Smith apples
- I used regular apple cider, not unsweetened
I wasn’t able to go to the farmers market for the unsweetened cider, but I wanted to try the recipe anyway. With this change, I’d say it tastes more like a crispy apple pie rather than an apple tart. It’s still absolutely delicious, just not the exact outcome.
Things to note:
The compote MUST be as dry as humanly possible. If liquid leaks, it’ll get into the crust. If it gets into the crust, it won’t bake consistently. One side was particularly soaked and uncooked, so I trimmed that part off. Mistakes happen, but now I know for the future!
I’m a beginner baker, so I found this recipe to be a little bit challenging. It has a lot of prep and steps, but it’s worth it in the end.
