Instructions

Step 1
In mixer bowl combine 3/4 cup flour, yeast, cardamom
Step 2
Heat milk, sugar, butter, and salt until warm (115 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit); stir constantly. Add to flour mixture

Add egg
Step 4
Beat at low speed for 1/2 minute
Step 5
Beat at high speed for 3 minutes
Step 6
Stir in as much remaining flour as you can mix in with a spoon
Step 7
On lightly floured surface, knead in enough remaining flour to make a moderately soft dough that is smooth and elastic (3 to 5 minutes total)

Shape into a ball

Place in greased bowl, turning once. Cover; let rise till double, about 1 1/4 hours.
Step 10
Punch down; divide into thirds. Cover, let rest 10 minutes.
Step 11
Roll out three 16" long ropes.
Step 12
Braid. Lightly brush with milk. Sprinkle with 1 tbsp sugar.
Step 13
Cover, let rise till nearly double (~40 minutes).
Step 14
Bake in 375 oven for about 20 minutes.
