Step 1

Prepare your pan and oven Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour your cake pan well to prevent the cake from sticking.

Combine dry ingredients In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. This ensures even distribution of the leavening agent.

Cream butter and sugar In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the softened butter until smooth. Gradually add the sugar and beat until the mixture is light and fluffy, which usually takes 2-3 minutes. This step incorporates air bubbles that give the cake its light texture.

Add eggs and vanilla Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Alternate wet and dry ingredients With the mixer on low speed, add the flour mixture in three batches, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix only until just combined to avoid overmixing, which can result in a dense cake.
