Ingredients

1 cupflour
all purpose or cake flour

1 cupgranulated sugar

¼ cupunsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoonbaking soda

½ teaspoonbaking powder

¼ teaspoonsalt

1egg
large

½ cupvegetable oil

½ cupbuttermilk
or whole milk with 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar

½ cupwater
hot, with a tablespoon instant coffee

5 tablespoonsunsalted butter
frosting

¼ cupcocoa powder
frosting

1 ¼ cuppowdered sugar
frosting

2 tablespoonsmilk
frosting

½ teaspoonvanilla
frosting
Instructions
Step 1
Line an 8 x 8 square pan with parchment paper, set aside
Step 2
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, soda, baking powder, and salt.
Step 3
Add egg, oil and buttermilk and mix well.
Step 4
Add hot coffee and mix.
Step 5
Pour into prepared pan and tap lightly to remove air bubbles.
Step 6
Bake for 26 to 30 minutes
Step 7
Cool before frosting
Step 8
To make frosting, melt butter in saucepan over medium low heat.
Step 9
Add cocoa powder and whisk in. Cook 2 minutes, but do not boil. Remove from heat and add powdered sugar and whisk in.
Step 10
Add milk and vanilla and whisk till smooth. Cool before frosting cake.
