Some instructions have side notes on the bottom. One issue you will run into is finding an 18.5 oz. German chocolate cake mix box. I purchased two (2) Betty Crocker Super Moist German Chocolate Cake Mix 15.25 oz. I used one whole box and measured the 3.25 oz. in a measuring cup.

Instructions

Step 1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 9-by-9-inch baking pan. Side Note: To grease the pan, get the same stick of butter used for this recipe before melting it, rub the whole pan with it and then proceed to melt the butter. Dust the pan with flour, be careful to use a lot.

Step 2
Begin by pouring 1/3 cup evaporated milk into a bowl with the cake mix. Add the melted butter and the chopped pecans. Mix the ingredients; it'll be pretty thick. Helpful Note: When finished mixing, it will turn into a dough bowl. Be careful with the pecans because they will fall out of the dough.
Step 3
Divide the dough in half down the middle. Press half of it into the bottom of the prepared pan to make the first brownie layer. Bake until slightly set, 8 to 10 minutes. Then remove from the oven and set aside. Side Note: When I split the dough, I used my hand. But you may use whatever works best for you. When pressing the half down into the bottom of the prepared pan, even it out with your fist and then use a spoon to cover the sides evenly.
Step 4
While the brownie layer is baking, in a glass bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water, combine the caramel and the remaining 1/2 cup of evaporated milk. Stir occasionally until the caramels are fully melted and the mixture is smooth. Pour the caramel mixture over the first baked layer, spreading it evenly distributed. Sprinkle the chocolate chips all over the top. Side Note: This step will take a long time when melting the caramels with the evaporated milk, ~20 to 25 minutes (maybe more or less). Please have patience while they melt; it gets boring. When it came to sprinkle the chocolate chips, I was not too fond of how little it was. So I added a handful more and distributed it evenly.
Step 5
Next, on a clean surface or a sheet of waxed paper, press the remaining dough into a square shape slightly smaller than the baking pan. Carefully set it on top of the chocolate chips. Bake for 23 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and let the brownies cool to room temperature. Cover the pan and allow the brownies to set for several hours.

Step 6
When you're ready to serve the brownies, before cutting, sprinkle them with powdered sugar and cut them into whatever size you would like.
