Step 1
Beat egg whites until foamy.
Step 2
Add cream of tartar and salt; beat until soft peaks form
Step 3
Add sugar, 2 Tbls at a time, beating until stiff peaks form
Step 4
Sprinkle flour over egg white mixture, 1/4 cup at a time; fold in carefully.
Step 5
Fold in vanilla
Step 6
Pour batter into an ungreased 10-inch tube pan, spreading evenly
Step 7
Bake at 375° for 30 to 35 minutes or until cake springs back when lightly touched
Step 8
Invert pan; cool 40 minutes
Step 9
Loosen cake from sides of pan using a narrow metal spatula; remove from pan
