Avocado
FridgeIs avocado a fruit or a vegetable? Because it has one giant pip (a seed) and grows from a tree, it’s technically a fruit. To get even more technical, it’s actually a berry. So the avocado can join tomatoes and aubergines as fruits which we treat like vegetables. Whether you like yours smothered on toast with a drop of lemon, added to a chicken salad for creaminess and satiety, with tacos as guacamole, or secretly baked into brownies and chocolate mousse for lightness and texture, avocados have definitely seen a huge rise in popularity over the last decade or two. There are three types of avocado in the world: Mexican, Guatemalan, and Indian. These three types combined make over 500 varieties, although the most common worldwide are Fuerte and Hass. If you like to include some in your daily diet, what are the actual nutritional benefits of avocado? They’re fairly high in calories, at around 200-300 per avocado, depending on size. So if you’re aiming to lose weight, you’ll probably want to watch how often you eat them, or how big your portion sizes are. But despite that, they are nutrient dense and considered to be a healthy food overall. So what are the benefits of tucking into this smooth green fruit? Don’t worry, there are plenty! The fats in avocados (called monounsaturated fats) which make them high-calorie are “good fats” or monounsaturated fats. They’re also a good source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, including vitamins K, C, E, B, and potassium. They also contain lutein, which is great for eye health. Because of their nutrient-dense qualities, avocado may be beneficial for skin health, blood sugar levels, and even arthritis management.
