Try McIntosh apples next time, and make sure the batter covers them.

Macintosh apples will mush when baked, they are for eating and Apple sauce only

@Christine Wilkins: McIntosh must be a different apple than Macintosh. I realize that there is nearly 3,000 different kinds of apples, and I certainly have not had experience with all the kinds. Thanks for the info! I get my apples from Saniquin, Ut. The orchard has been there since the 1840's. Where do you get yours from?
