If it is bland, it is not the apple's fault. A couple of measurements that are very, very important are totally left up to you. Notice that all the spices and seasonings are "to taste". That means you add less than you think you'll like, stir it up, and taste it. Then add more, stir it up, and taste it again. If that is not possible, say if you are slow cooking meat, you must be very careful. Always remember that flavors that come from minerals, like salt, do not evaporate, but flavors that come from herbs, or are extracts, do evaporate. So you must have more herbs or extracts than minerals to make great flavor when cooking or baking.
