You need garam masala for any authentic curry, if you don’t have it just use cinnamon sticks, star anise, Cardamom seeds etc

So generally people have their own blends. There are shop bought versions available (Raja, Taj, Shaan, East End are some main stream brands I know of and have used). A simple whole spice version my grandmother uses for curries (but can also be ground up) is cinnamon bark, cardamom, cloves, whole peppercorns (you can add star anise etc too..lots of home blend recipes online)
