Preheat your oven on at 190c/Gas mark 5

Put your butter in a microwave safe bowl then place in the microwave for 1 minute so it's soft

Place the soft butter and caster sugar in a bowl and beat together with a wooden spoon

Stir in the egg and vanilla essence with the same spoon

Sift in the plain flour, baking powder and salt into a different bowl and stir together

Pour the flour mixture into the butter and sugar mixture

Add the chocolate chips and stir everything together

Roll the mixture into golf-ball sized portions in your palms and flatten them with your fingers onto non-stick baking tray, 5cm apart

Put in the oven for 11 minutes

Remove from the oven. Don't worry if they are not quite down- they will harden when they cool

Place the cookies on a rack for 10 minutes
