Instructions

Step 1
Put butter in freezer to chill for about 60 minutes.
Step 2
Shave zest from lemon peel.
Step 3
Squeeze lemon juice from 1/2 of a lemon
Step 4
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and baking powder.
Step 5
In a separate medium mixing bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, lemon juice, and vanilla extract.
Step 6
Grate the frozen butter using a cheese shredder.
Step 7
Add the shredded frozen butter to the bowl with the dry ingredients. Mix together with two forks or using your hands until the mixture resembles coarse oatmeal.
Step 8
Combine the wet ingredients into the bowl with dry ingredients. Add the lemon peel, chopped dates and chopped walnuts. Mix together lightly until just blended.
Step 9
With floured hands, work the dough into two balls. Press the balls into flat discs. Cut the dough into triangle wedges.
Step 10
Place the wedges of dough onto a cooking sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle the surface of the wedges with sparkling sugar.
Step 11
Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until cooked through and golden brown on the edges.
