Step 1
Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Beef: In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned; drain excess grease. Season the beef with salt, pepper, and garlic powder (add chopped onion now if using).

Mix the Sauce: Stir in the cream of mushroom soup to the cooked beef and simmer for 2–3 minutes until heated and combined.

Assemble the Casserole: Spread the beef mixture evenly in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish, then spread the mashed potatoes over the beef like a frosting layer.
Step 5
Top with Cheese: Sprinkle shredded cheddar evenly over the mashed potatoes.
Step 6
Bake: Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly and edges are lightly golden.
Step 7
Rest & Serve: Let the casserole rest a few minutes before scooping and serving.
