This is the delicious South African milk tart but with a few twists! Firstly we are working smart and not hard by using already made shortcrust pastry dough from your local supermarket and the extra twist is a dash of almond essence. This came out so creamy and morish!

The Base
Step 1
Grab a dish of your choice

Roll out your store bought shortcrust pastry dough. Ensure not to make it too thick.
Step 3
Shape it and press it firmly into the dish

Put it into the oven at 180°C for about 20 minutes or until golden. Once cooked, set aside.
For the filling
Step 5
In a bowl, add your eggs, sugar, corn flour, cake flour, vanilla essence, almond essence (optional) and pinch of salt. Mix it on medium speed until combined.
Step 6
Put the bowl aside.
Step 7
In a medium pot on the stove, add your milk and bring it to a simmer. Do not let it boil.
Step 8
Add the butter to the milk and keep stirring until the butter melts.
Step 9
Then add half the mixture from the bowl into the simmering pot and keep stirring it. Then when combined add the rest of the mixture.
Step 10
Keep stirring and simmering the filling until it becomes a thick consistency.
Step 11
Add the filling onto the cooked pastry and smooth it out.
Step 12
Sprinkle the top of the tart with ground cinnamon

Put it into the fridge for at least 2 hours or until it has set.
