Ingredients

1 poundextra-lean ground beef
1 tablespoonolive oil
1onion
diced
2cloves garlic
minced
3red & orange mini sweet peppers
diced
1 x 8 ouncecan tomato sauce
2 teaspoonsliquid smoke
1 ½ tablespoonsbrown sugar
½ teaspoonmustard powder
½ teaspoonsalt
½ teaspoonchili powder
¼ teaspoonsavory
¼ teaspoonblack pepper
freshly ground
⅛ teaspoonbay leaf powder
8whole-wheat burger buns
Instructions
Step 1
Brown the meat and onion in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat for 5 minutes, breaking up the meat into crumbles as it cooks.
Step 2
Pour the drippings out of the pan and discard.
Step 3
Add the garlic and green pepper and cook 5 minutes more, stirring occasionally.
Step 4
Stir in the rest of the ingredients, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 5 minutes more.
Step 5
Place a half-cup scoop of the mixture onto each bun and serve.
