The infamous family dessert.
Tools needed:
- 15" x 10" jelly roll pan
- Parchment paper, silpat, butter, or crisco (to line pan)
- Mixer
- 2 mixing bowls
- Rubber scraper
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Large kitchen towel
- Wax paper
- Tinfoil

Instructions
Step 1
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Step 2
Grease and lightly flour a 15x10 jelly roll pan.
Step 3
Sift together flour, baking powder, cocoa, and salt.
Step 4
In a small bowl, beat egg yolks and vanilla until thick and lemon colored. Gradually add 1/3 cup sugar, beating until the sugar is dissolved. (wash beaters before using them to beat the egg whites)
Step 5
In a separate bowl beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add the 1/2 cup granulated sugar. Continue beating until stiff peaks form.
Step 6
Fold yolk mixture into the whites
Step 7
Sprinkle flour mixture over egg mixture and fold in gently. (do not beat! merely fold in gently)
Step 8
Spread batter evenly into prepared pan. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 12 - 15 minutes or until done.
Step 9
While baking, spread towel out onto counter and lightly coat with sifted powdered sugar.
Step 10
Immediately loosen edges of cake from pan and turn our onto prepared towel.
Step 11
Starting at the narrow end, roll warm cake and towel together and cool on a wire rack.
Step 12
Unroll and spread with softened ice cream. Roll up cake and cover with wax paper and tinfoil. Freeze for at least a couple hours to allow ice cream to harden.
Step 13
Slice and serve with toppings of your choice.
