My Grandma's homemade roll recipe. She always made them for all the major holidays. I like to turn it into bread rather than shaping rolls.

Step 1
Put 2 tbsp yeast and 2 tbsp sugar into 1 c warm water to raise. On stovetop, scald 1 c milk with 2 tbsp shortening or butter. Beat one egg in a separate bowl. Slowly pour milk into the egg while stirring. If you pour too fast and don't stir while pouring, the egg will scramble. Mix in yeast/water mixture until smooth. Add 1/2 c sugar and pinch of salt and mix. Begin stirring in the flour 1 c at a time until integrated. Dough should be very thick, but still stirable with a spoon. Let raise until double, then pour into loaf pans. Let raise again, then cook for 10-20 mins at 375 F.
