Garlic salt

Garlic saltPantry

Garlic salt is garlic powder combined with salt and an anti-caking agent like calcium silicate so it doesn’t clump together and go hard. The ratio is usually around one part garlic flakes or powder to three parts plain salt. It can’t be used interchangeably with garlic powder or even fresh garlic, but does form a useful part of the “garlic seasoning” family. We firmly believe it should have a spot in everyone’s pantry! Why? It’s convenient to keep on hand because it’s basically two seasonings in one. You can use it in place of normal salt in many savory recipes but make sure to account for it instead of adding the normal salt too. Because it’s mixed with salt, know that the garlic flavor is diluted – but you can’t heap it in the way you would with pure garlic or you’ll end up with a dish which is way too salty to eat. However, it’s a great way to add a bit of extra zing to an otherwise plain dish. Garlic salt can jazz up things like dips and meat marinades, as well as roasted vegetables or meat. Naturally, it goes great with both chicken and beef, and garlic salt is potato’s best friend. You can make your own version at home by combining salt and garlic powder but make sure to keep it in an airtight container and store it somewhere dry to avoid it sticking together as you won’t have an anti-caking agent.
