Perfect roasted, thrown into salads, or eaten on their own as a healthy snack. Grape tomatoes: Just like their name, they’re similar in size to a grape and also come in a variety of colors. Although they can be used interchangeably with cherry tomatoes, they are a bit less juicy with a slightly thicker skin. Roma tomatoes: Also known as plum tomatoes, they are medium-sized, sweet, and juicy. They’re great for making fresh tomato sauce or salsas. Beefsteak tomatoes: Large and firm, these tomatoes are mild and juicy but hold their shape well, making them perfect for slicing for burgers or sandwiches. Heirloom tomatoes: Rich in flavor, heirloom tomatoes are unique in shape and vary in color. They are great for caprese salads or for making sauces. Green tomatoes: Green tomatoes are simply unripe tomatoes. They are firm, slightly tangy and are most often used for making fried green tomatoes, a popular dish in the southern United States. Fruit or vegetable, there’s no denying that tomatoes are an excellent choice for a wholesome diet. They are rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium, and folate. Tomatoes also contain lycopene, an antioxidant that has been associated with health benefits including a reduced risk of prostate cancer, lowered blood pressure, and improved heart health.
