15 steps

This recipe can be made as is or you can substitute the apples with other fruit. I have used home preserved plums very successfully but you could probably also use peaches or apricots

Instructions

Step 1
Preheat oven to 180 degrees
Step 2
Lightly grease a pie plate with butter

Pastry

Step 3
Cream butter & sugar
Step 4
Add Eggs
Step 5
Mix in flour - if you have used a hand mixer for steps one and two you may want to do this by hand. If you are using a larger mixer it’s fine to do this with the mixer
Step 6
Divide mixture in two. Use one half to line the bottom of a lightly greased pie plate. Wrap the remaining half in glad wrap and put both the container and the wrapped half into the fridge to chill. This step is optional but I always try to do it.

Filling

Step 7
Peel, core and slice apples
Step 8
Place into a pot with sugar and cloves, and cover with water
Step 9
Bring to boil and allow to boil for approx minute. No longer as the apples will become too soft and mushy
Step 10
Drain and allow to cool

Assembly

Step 11
Place cooled and drained apples into pie plate that you have lined with half of the pastry
Step 12
Grate remaining pastry over the top of apple and bake till golden brown

Serving

Step 13
Sprinkle crumble with caster sugar
Step 14
Crumble can be served warm or cold
Step 15
Serve with custard or cream.
