Aussie Childhood Classics Episode 1: Jam Roly Poly
Was Jam Roly Poly a part of your Aussie childhood?
Now Jam Roly Poly is actually a very traditional British dish, but in true Australian style, this dessert has made its way to Australia and been claimed as our own! My fiancé said his Nan made this religiously for him as a child and by the sounds of it, it has been very popular in many Australian households over the years.

Its just a super easy dough that comes together in 5 minutes, that’s rolled out and filled with jam. Its then rolled up and wrapped in foil then placed in the oven for an hour with a tray of water in oven below to steam the Roly Poly.

Instructions

Step 1
Preheat oven to 160C fan forced and fill a baking dish with water and sit on the bottom shelf of the oven (this will help steam the Roly Poly once its baking!)
Step 2
Prepare an extra large sheet of foil, and place an equal sized piece of baking paper on top, then butter the baking paper. This will be used to wrap your Roly Poly
Step 3
Pulse the flour, butter, sugar and vanilla in a food processor until well combined and you can’t see the butter
Step 4
Transfer the mixture to a mixing bowl then mix through the suet and milk until a dough forms
Step 5
Flour your bench and roll out the dough until its approximated 20 x 30cm
Step 6
Spread the jam and spread it close to the edge on the side closest to you, and leave a 1 inch space on the other side. Then carefully roll beginning on the side closed to you.
Step 7
Pinch it closed both length ways and at the ends then carefully transfer to the centre of the baking paper and foil with the join side facing down.

Bring the sides of the foil up and around the Roly Poly to seal it shut. You want to leave a fair bit of space so that the Roly Poly can expand and rise so don’t do it too tight.

Place on a tray and bake it in the oven for 1 hour
Step 8
Let it sit for 5 minutes still rolled in the foil then slice it up and serve with custard. Enjoy!
