Instructions

Step 1
Sift flour with baking powder, baking soda, salt and nutmeg; set aside.
Step 2
In the large bowl of an electric mixer, at medium speed, beat butter, sugar, and egg until light and fluffy.
Step 3
At low speed, beat in sour cream and vanilla until smooth.
Step 4
Gradually add flour mixture, beating until well combined.
Step 5
With rubber scraper, divide the dough in half. Scrape each half onto a sheet of plastic wrap, wrap in the plastic wrap, forming the dough into discs. Refrigerate for four hours, preferably overnight.
Step 6
When ready to bake, preheat oven to 375 F. Lightly grease cookie sheets or line with parchment paper.
Step 7
On a well-floured surface, roll dough, one part at a time, 1/4 inch thick.
Step 8
With floured cookie cutters, cut out cookies. Using a spatula, place cookies on the baking sheets, 2 inches apart.
Step 9
Once you have a full sheet, refrigerate cookies until firm, about 10 minutes.
Step 10
When the cookies are firm, take them out of the refrigerator. Beat the egg white with 1 tsp water to make an egg wash. Brush the egg wash on the top of the cookies. Decorate with sprinkles.
Step 11
Bake 10 - 12 minutes, or until lightly golden. Remove the cookies to a wire rack, cool.
Step 12
Continue rolling out the dough and reroll trimmings as the other cookies chill and bake.
