Instructions
Step 1
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x9-inch baking pan.

2. In a mixing bowl, combine the yellow butter cake mix, softened butter, and egg. Mix until crumbly but well combined.

3. Press 2/3 of the mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking pan, packing it down firmly.

4. Refrigerate the remaining 1/3 of the mixture until ready to use.

5. Bake the crust in the preheated oven for 13-15 minutes or until lightly browned.

6. While the crust is cooling, melt the caramel bits with heavy cream in the microwave in 45-second intervals until smooth and melted.

7. Pour the melted caramel over the baked crust and sprinkle kosher salt over the caramel, if desired.

8. Crumble the reserved mixture from the refrigerator over the top of the salted caramel layer and press it down slightly.

9. Bake the bars for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
