1 ½ cupsgranulated sugar

Step 1
Preheat the Oven: Preheat to 400°F (200°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
Step 2
Mix the Dry Ingredients: Whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and optional spices.
Step 3
Cream Butter and Sugar: Beat softened butter and sugar until fluffy. Incorporate eggs, vanilla, and almond extract.
Step 4
Combine Wet and Dry: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet, alternating with milk or sour cream. If sticky, chill for 30 minutes.
Step 5
Roll and Cut: Roll dough to ¼-inch thickness, cut shapes, and place on sheets.
Step 6
Bake: Bake for 6-8 minutes, edges just golden. Cool on sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to racks.
Step 7
Decorate: Mix icing ingredients, tint with food coloring, and decorate with sprinkles or candy.
