Instructions

Step 1
Prepare the Fruit: Peel and core the apples. Slice them into even wedges or cubes. If they are very soft, keep the slices slightly thicker so they don't dissolve completely. Melt Butter: In a large skillet or saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Combine Ingredients: Add the apple slices, water, sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and salt to the pan. Stir well to coat every slice evenly. Cover and Simmer: Place a lid on the pan. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 5–8 minutes. Since older apples have less moisture, they will soften faster than fresh ones. Check for Tenderness: Remove the lid and stir. The apples should be "fork-tender" but still holding their shape. If there is too much liquid, simmer uncovered for another 2–3 minutes to thicken it into a syrup. Final Touch: Taste and add more cinnamon or sweetener if needed. For a richer flavor, stir in a splash of vanilla extract after removing from the heat.
