Instructions

Step 1
Heat the oil in a large skillet over low heat. Stir in the flour until the mixture is smooth. Continue stirring until it turns a nice, fudgy brown color, about 12-15 minutes (Be careful to keep stirring so the mixture doesn’t burn)
Step 2
Stir in the frozen okra and chopped onions. Add the broth plus 3 cans of water (or equal amount of water, if you half this recipe).
Step 3
Add chicken or shrimp. Add salt, pepper, cayenne pepper, and garlic powder.
Step 4
Simmer, covered, for a couple of hours, stirring occasionally. Serve over rice.
